Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.
Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.
Athletes are granted the ability to question particular decisions made by the official, echoing the practice currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step follows just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
