The Lingering Psychological Scars In the Wake of Hurricane Melissa: A Trail of Mental Anguish Throughout Jamaica.

When Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica on the 28th of October with ferocious 185mph gusts, it left behind a scene of utter destruction. Residences, hospitals, and critical infrastructure were destroyed, resulting in 32 fatalities and affecting an staggering 1.5 million people. For clinical psychologist Toni-Jan Ifill, it was immediately clear that the physical wreckage would be shadowed by profound and long-term traumatic memories.

“Simple things can trigger them,” Ifill explains. “A patient mentioned a trolley we often move through the passageways, whose noise sounded like splintering trees and the roaring storm. She no longer wants to listening to that particular noise.”

Over six weeks after the storm, which also affected parts of Cuba, flashbacks of the terrifying winds continue to affect some staff at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston. The mere sound of rain can now prompt stress reactions among individuals who endured it.

The Unseen Cost Beyond Economic Reconstruction

This disaster resulted in a substantial aid package worth up to billions of dollars over a three-year period and an further disbursement of $150m from a groundbreaking risk financing tool. However, authorities note this economic assistance cannot cover the unseen cost: extensive emotional suffering—notably among those still recovering from Hurricane Beryl in 2024.

Whereas most attention is directed toward restoring buildings, academic work over the past three years demonstrate that the risk of severe anxiety disorders rises markedly after hurricanes and forced relocation. Experts are now advocating for the integration of psychological care into national recovery strategies across the region.

Increased Risks: Loss and Psychological Well-being

Researchers stress how prolonged homelessness, vanishing incomes, and poor access to care amplify mental health risks. A 2023 Caribbean-focused paper warned of a heightened danger of severe mental health issues after extreme weather. Another study recorded parallel psychological turmoil among people affected by previous storms.

Dr. Eamin Heanoy, a researcher who has examined disaster survivors globally, notes that survivors could face several key emotional obstacles: severe stress and mood disorders.

Dr. Rose-Ann Smith, a professor in disaster studies, concurs. She notes that while individuals can be strong, as the planet continues to warm, emotional fallout is becoming an ever more critical issue—although comprehensive data is not widely available.

These experts found that women showed more severe emotional impact than men. “This suggests women are more psychologically vulnerable than males during these events,” Smith explains.

The Difficult Journey to Healing

Dr. Heanoy states that while some early progress in psychological state is often seen within a year, the ultimate prognosis can be unpredictable. The extent to which survivors recover depends heavily on the nature of the trauma and the resources accessible.

The experts note that the destruction of property and possessions can heighten the mental struggle to recover. Smith describes housing loss “a key traumatic factor,” especially when insurance or savings are lacking. “Rebuilding comes with its own emotional tax,” she adds.

Ifill sees the parallel situation among her patients: “Individuals who had pre-existing mental health challenges have found it’s much more severe in this time since the storm.”

Beyond the emotional impact, physical challenges continue. The hurricane wiped out vital water infrastructure, hampering the reliable supply of clean water. Financial aid, while helpful, are insufficient to fix the systemic weaknesses exposed by the storm.

Social Cohesion as a Critical Pillar

Perhaps most importantly is that physical reconstruction by itself cannot heal the psychological injuries caused by permanent disabilities. Research shows that survivors commonly experience help from neighbors to be more immediate than official aid.

“Official action is important,” Smith states. “In its absence, or when it is slow, communities provide mutual aid.”

Ifill also highlights the power of social bonds in coping with disaster. She notes she was “impressed by the resilient spirit” among strong communities. “Your house is gone, right? But if a community has a supportive culture, they find lightness about the storm.”

Additionally, she praises initiatives to encourage psychological self-care after the disaster but warns about the harms of doomscrolling. “My advice was limiting social media, sticking to reliable news, and using messaging apps to maintain social support.”

An Increasing International Focus

Over the past decade, psychosocial care has garnered greater attention from world bodies due to the intensifying climate crisis. The growing regularity of climate disasters has led to the development of frameworks for mental health response.

Major health organizations have published practical guides to help field workers in delivering emotional aid in the aftermath of disasters. These efforts aim to strengthen psychological fortitude by training professionals, reducing shame, and promoting the access to psychological care.

Financial resources are also highlighted as crucial for protecting mental health. A farmer from another Caribbean nation, who lost his livelihood in a similar event, emphasizes the hopelessness that arises when official support never arrives. “Assessments were made... But up to this day, we did not receive the promised help,” he recounts.

An Appeal for Comprehensive Healing

Analysts note that the Caribbean region is responsible for a very small fraction of global emissions yet suffers disastrous climate impacts. A swift, well-funded recovery is deemed vital to avoid prolonged suffering.
