Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or remain detained.”
