Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Significant Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
