Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" observation after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
