Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he added. "Including them were numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
