A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
